In this fun Adobe Illustrator tutorial, create a color block background with a zigzag wavy pattern inside it. Use the zigzag effect, rectangular grid tool, polar grid tool and shape builder tool in this tutorial. Let’s get started:
- Create a new document of width and height 900px.
- Create wavy pattern:
- Using the Line Segment tool, draw a line of length 300px and angle 0°
- From Stroke panel, set its stroke weight to 9px and Cap to Round Cap.
- Click on Effect > Distort and Transform > Zig Zag.
- Options: Size: 20px, Ridges per segment: 5, Points: Smooth.
- Click on Object > Expand Appearance.
- Click on Object > Expand.
- Select it, right click > Transform > Move (or Object > Transform > Move).
- Settings: Horizontal: 300px, Vertical: 0px.
- Click on Copy.
- Select both the zigzag lines.
- Go to Pathfinder panel > Unite.
- Using Rectangle tool, draw a rectangle of width and height 300px.
- Set its fill to none and stroke black.
- Align the zigzag line at the top and center of the rectangle using the Align panel.
- Now move the line up by 20px (Hold shift and press up arrow key twice).
- Right click > Transform > Move (or Object > Transform > Move).
- Settings: Horizontal: 0px, Vertical: 75px.
- Click on Copy.
- Click on Object > Transform > Transform Again (shortcut is Cmd D / Ctrl D).
- Copy this 2 times.
- Select the rectangle.
- Give it fill color and set stroke to none.
- Now click on Object > Arrange > Send to back.
- Click on Edit > Copy. Then Edit > Paste in Back.
- Now set fill color to none for this new rectangle.
- Give desired color to the zigzag lines.
- Select all lines and both rectangles and drag to the Swatches panel.
- Now change the colors of the lines and rectangle and create the other patterns.
- Create grid:
- Using the Polar Grid tool, create a grid with the settings:
- Default size:- Width: 900px; Height: 900px
- Concentric dividers:- Number: 2; Skew: 0%
- Radial dividers: Number: 0; Skew: 0%
- Using the Rectangular Grid tool, create a grid with the settings:
- Default size:- Width: 900px; Height: 900px
- Horizontal dividers:- Number: 0; Skew: 0%
- Vertical dividers:- Number: 1; Skew: 0%
- Align both grids to the center using the Align panel.
- Set their stroke to black.
- Now select both grids.
- Click on Shape builder tool and fill the shapes with the patterns and the colors.
- Once done, set stroke back to none.
- Using the Polar Grid tool, create a grid with the settings:
