Create Geometric Blocks in Adobe Illustrator using the Rectangular Grid tool

In this quick tutorial, learn to create Geometric Blocks in Adobe Illustrator using the Rectangular Grid tool and Shape Builder tool.

  1. Create a new document of width and height 1080px.
  2. Using the Rectangular Grid tool, click anywhere on the Artboard to create a rectangular grid with the following settings:
    1. Width = 1080px
    2. Height = 1080px
    3. Horizontal Dividers = 18
    4. Vertical Dividers = 18
  3. Align it to the center of the Artboard using the Align panel.
  4. Choose your colors and create their swatches in the Swatches panel (You can refer to the shades of blue used in the video).
  5. Now change the fill and stroke of the rectangular grid to the color of your choice (light blue in the video). This will act as the background color and the border color.
  6. Select the grid, using the Selection tool (shortcut V).
  7. Select the Shape Builder tool (shortcut – Shift + M), select the color of your choice and click and drag on some parts of the grid. This joins those parts and fills them with the chosen color.
  8. Similarly click and drag on the various other parts of the grid using the same color and then changing the color.
