In this fun Adobe Illustrator tutorial, create a 3D pop art style color block geometric background.
- Create a new document of width and height 900px.
- Creating the cube:
- Using the Rectangle tool, draw a rectangle of width and height 100px.
- Set the stroke to 3px.
- Right click > Transform > Move (or Object > Transform > Move)
- Settings:- Horizontal: 100px, Vertical: 0px; Click on Copy.
- Again right click > Transform > Move (or Object > Transform > Move)
- Settings:- Horizontal: 0px; Vertical: -100px; Click on Copy.
- Using the Direct Selection tool, select the 2 upper points of the upper square.
- Right click > Transform > Move (or Object > Transform > Move)
- Settings: Horizontal: 50px, Vertical: 50px; Click on Ok.
- Using the Direct Selection tool, select the 2 right side points of the square at the right side.
- Right click > Transform > Move
- Settings: Horizontal: -50px, Vertical: -50px; Click on Ok.
- Using Selection tool, select all 3 shapes.
- From the stroke panel, set Corner to Round Join.
- Click on Object > Group.
- Align the cube to the bottom left of the Artboard using the Align panel.
- Duplicating the cube:
- Select the cube.
- Right click > Transform > Move (or Object > Transform > Move)
- Settings: Horizontal: 150px, Vertical: -50px; Click on Copy.
- Click on Object > Transform > Transform Again (shortcut is Cmd D / Ctrl D).
- Copy this 3 times.
- Now select all the cubes.
- Right click > Transform > Move (or Object > Transform > Move)
- Settings: Horizontal: 50px, Vertical: -150px; Click on Copy.
- Now copy this 4 times using the shortcut Cmd D / Ctrl D.
- Delete extra cubes.
- Creating the shadow:
- Using Line tool, draw a slant line from the first cube towards bottom right end of the Artboard (Hold shift while drawing).
- Right click > Transform > Move (or Object > Transform > Move)
- Settings: Horizontal: 100px, Vertical: 0px; Click on Copy.
- Now select both the lines.
- Right click > Transform > Move (or Object > Transform > Move)
- Settings: Horizontal: 150px, Vertical: -50px; Click on Copy.
- Now copy this 4 times using the shortcut Cmd D / Ctrl D.
- Now using the Rectangle tool, draw a rectangle of width and height 900px.
- Colors:
- Open Swatches panel, click on top right icon > Open Swatch Library > Art History > Pop Art.
- Click on the last color group.
- It is now added to our Swatches panel.
- Select everything on the Artboard.
- Click on the Shape Builder tool (shortcut is Shift + M).
- Start filling the colors in the shapes.
- After completing, delete the parts that are outside the Artboard.
